Computerized physician order entry (CPOE)

The computerized physician order entry module (CPOE) is the gateway in Profdoc where orders for all disciplines of laboratory testing are made, such as radiology, biochemistry, microbiology, cytology / histology etc.

The advantages of using the CPOE are numerous. The built-in logic and catalogues of order items ensure that tests are always ordered correctly in the system. The fully electronic and seamlessly integrated interface with the ancillary information systems in the laboratories greatly reduces the workload in the laboratories.

A structured summary and work order always follows a request to simplify the laboratory work. Advance orders make it possible to place orders at any time, no matter when the tests are going to be performed.

Ordering

The order interface in Profdoc has a broad range of built-in logic. The interface acts as the laboratories’ extended arm out to the care personnel. The screens and menus contain logic to ensure that the user fills out the order correctly based on the analysis to be performed. The intelligence in the order interface in Profdoc is built over many years together with specialists from the different laboratory disciplines.

Catalogue of order items

It is the laboratories and their personnel who are responsible for their own catalogues of order items which are used to form the order interface in Profdoc. A catalogue of order items contains information about which analyses can be ordered and how the order information must be completed.

In this way, Profdoc is automatically updated in line with relevant changes in the laboratories' product range, and the responsibility for system consistency is clearly defined.

Advance orders

Advance orders are used to create a schedule of future tests based on planned patient activities. In this way, the laboratories can manage their work more efficiently, both in-house and at external testing facilities. For these orders, much of the required information has been entered ahead of time, thus saving everybody considerable effort when the patient arrives for the actual testing.

Laboratory interface

When the user clicks the button ‘order now’, an electronic order file (EDI-file) is created and sent to the ancillary information system in the laboratory, which again reads all the information from the file. When samples arrive at the laboratory, the order information is already in the laboratory computer and the analysis work can start without delay.

Labels and printing

When an order is created, an order summary is printed together with bar code labels to mark the specimen. The order summary contains all the necessary instructions for the personnel to carry out the actual sample extraction, preparation and analysis.

Profdoc prints both the order summary and bar code labels on a standard laser printer using blank A4 paper with a partly glued back side for the labels. Thus, Profdoc prints out both the order summary and the necessary labels in one common operation without using special hardware.
