Medication administration record

The Medication administration record is used in everyday work to handle prescribing, dispensing, planning and administration of medication.

The main functions of the medication administration record module are:

• Overviews
• Prescribing
• Medication administration
• Printed and electronic prescriptions

Overviews

Each ward can tailor overviews for the patient’s current and planned medication based on the ward’s specific requirements.

In the medication list, the name of the drug, the dosage form (capsule, tablet, injection etc.), strength, dosage, first dosage, time schedule, maximum dosage, instructions, reason for medication etc. can be shown.

The prescribed medication can even be shown in a timeline with day-by-day presentation of dose changes and administrations.

Prescribing

Prescribing of medication is done from a system-resident database of all available drugs, or from predefined lists for each ward.

There are also easy ways to retrieve a patient’s previous medication and renew prescriptions. Various user categories can set up lists of suggested medication for later approval and final prescribing by authorized personnel.

Warnings are shown for registered oversensitivity based on active substance (ATC-codes), or if the patient already has been prescribed a similar drug. Additional tools for drug utilization review can easily be integrated for warning and information about drug interactions, contraindications, pregnancy, adverse effects, overdosage etc.

Medication administration

A special display is available for medication administration, where an overview shows the medication to be administered at scheduled times or as needed. In this overview, the delivery of medication can be marked either one drug at a time or several drugs together.

Beginning and end of infusions are easily managed and documented from the administration overview. The overview will also show whether the patient himself administers the drug. For each drug, a clear administration history is presented together with deviations and disturbances if any.

Printed and electronic prescriptions

A printing and electronic prescription function is also available for drugs to be dispensed and administered outside the department, ward or hospital.

The prescription module contains the same rich functionality as prescribing otherwise in the module, and in addition contains relevant features needed to prescribe different drug categories through an external pharmacy or dispensing agent.

The prescriptions can either be printed or sent as electronic prescriptions to the external pharmacy system
